The Subaru Impreza has been manufactured by Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Subaru Leone and is powered by a turbo charged flat 4 boxer EJ Series coupled to an in-line 4 wheel drive system with well-balanced weight distribution and a low centre of gravity. The car was characterised by its incredible handling & performance, initially it’s understated styling, bonnet intercooler scoop and it’s uneven engine note. This model exists in 7 variants offered in 2, 4 and 5 door variants from 1992 until 2001, with each model offering subtle changes in facelift styling, power, design and overall specification as the car evolved.

The clever aluminium boxer design provides good anti vibration properties as each piston is countered by a piston in the opposing cylinder bank, eliminating the need for a counter-weighted rotating crankshaft. Torque steer is also reduced with this type of powertrain layout since the front drive shafts are of equal length and weight.
Subaru introduced Subaru Technica International (STI) versions in Japan. These models were upgraded from the standard WRX in many areas including blueprinted engines, transmissions, and suspensions. The STi versions of the WRX were immensely successful in rallies and popular among street racers but were only sold in the Japanese market. In Europe, the WRX was introduced as the Impreza GT and as the Impreza Turbo 2000 in the UK.
As the cars following gained momentum, Limited Edition models soon followed to commemorate the cars success in Rallying off the back of Constructor World Rally Championship wins in 1995,1996 & 1997 in the hands of drivers such as Colin McRae, Carlos Sainz and Ari Vatanen to name but a few.
The Subaru Motorsport campaign was orchestrated through UK based Motorsport preparation company, Prodrive. Our close links with Prodrive meant there was a natural flow of information, OE parts and STI performance parts from the Banbury based outfit to RCM. This understanding and depth of Subaru knowledge can be seen today in our range of RCM Power Parts designed exclusively for the Impreza.
